	Wrongful Accusations of Rape
	In a study that span nine years, sociologist Eugene J. Kanin’s findings were that in the United States, 41% of rape allegations are false. Kanin discovered that most of the false accusers were motivated by a need for an alibi or seeking revenge. Kanin was once popular and highly praised by the feminist movement for his groundbreaking research on male sexual aggression. His studies on false rape accusations have received very little interest. These findings are not exceptional. The U.S. Air Force studied over five hundred rape accusations in 1985. More than 130 of the accusers admitted, either just before they took a lie detector test or after they had failed it, that no rape occurred. A more in depth investigation by independent reviewers established that 60% of the original rape allegations were a sham. Linda Fairstein is the head of the New York County District Attorney's Sex Crimes Unit. She states there are a concerning 4,000 reports of rape each year in Manhattan. Of these, about 2,000 did not happen.

	June 22, 2010 - Orlando police warned the public Tuesday morning that making a false claim is a crime after they said the 18-year-old woman who claimed she was raped Monday was lying. Samaria Renford called police after she wrecked her boyfriend's BMW on Rosamond Drive near North Orange Blossom Trail.The report states Renford hoped if her boyfriend found out she was raped, he'd take her back and be nicer to her. Local police are planning to discuss Tuesday morning the recent spike in false rape being reported. Police said another woman, Luisa Martinez, also made a false claim she was raped on East Pine Street in downtown Orlando.

	For 12 haunted years Gary Dotson had prayed for this day. Standing in a Chicago courtroom, he heard Cook County Chief Criminal Courts Judge Thomas R. Fitzgerald pronounce the words of absolution: "You, sir, are discharged." Four years after the woman he had been convicted of raping recanted her accusation, Dotson, 32, was a free man. In 1977 Cathy Crowell was a frightened 16-year-old, worried that she was pregnant by her boyfriend, David Beirne. She made up a rape story and stuck to it even when Dotson, whom she had never met, was jailed. Then in 1985, after becoming a born-again Christian, she came forward to confess it was all a fabrication.

	March 2010 - CASTLE ROCK (AP) - A 23-year-old woman was sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to falsely accusing a Parker police officer of beating and raping her. 	September, 16 2009 - HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A Hofstra University student admitted that she made up a story about being gang raped by five men. The woman had told police that she was attacked at about 3 a.m. on Sunday after being lured into a men's bathroom in the dormitory. Nassau County DA Kathleen Rice said, while she was being questioned Wednesday evening, the woman admitted that the encounter was consensual.

	Woman Claiming Officer Raped Her
	June 13, 2009 - Parker,Colo. A 22-year-old woman who claimed a Parker police officer beat and raped her after she was kicked out of a bar was arrested Thursday on charges of false reporting. Petersen and several friends were at the Tailgate Tavern in Parker, and were asked to leave because the bar was closing. Petersen became uncooperative because she didn't want to leave so bar staffers called police for help. Petersen was escorted out of the bar by two uniformed Parker police officers. Later Petersen reported that she was "beaten and raped" by one of those officers.

	August 13,2009 Biurny Peguero(aka Biurny Gonzalez), accused McCaffrey of raping her in September 2005, and he was convicted by the State Supreme Court in Manhattan. But in March, Gonzalez confessed to her priest, and later to her attorney, that she had fabricated the rape story. Gonzalez initially accused McCaffrey of raping her while on the way to a late-night party. According to the Post, Gonzalez now says she lied about being raped because her friends were angry with her for stranding them without a ride when she went off to the party with McCaffrey.

After spending a decade behind bars, a former Camp Pendleton Marine is now a free man because a military appeals court ruled that "a muddled, hearsay-based case" caused his spousal-rape conviction. His ordeal began when a military jury at Camp Pendleton convicted him of spousal rape and related charges on Dec. 3, 1999. He received a 17-year prison sentence. But in a February ruling, a three-member appellate panel cited a host of problems with the prosecution's case: "There was no forensic evidence of the alleged rape. Foster and his wife, Heather, continued having sex for years after the alleged rape and even made a sex tape together. The rape accusation arose during a contentious divorce and custody battle for the couple's two boys. The court-martial judge allowed misleading or unreliable testimony from three witnesses. Foster's lead attorney handled the case poorly, such as not cross-examining a crucial witness." The judges dismissed the rape charge with prejudice, meaning it can't be refiled. Foster can be retried for aggravated assault and making threats linked to other alleged incidents, but the appellate panel said if he's convicted, his maximum punishment would be a dishonorable discharge.
